Driveway calls come in hot: the customer has a dimension in their head and wants a number before you hang up. The calculator above gets you a defensible ballpark in seconds: length times width, times a per-square-foot rate by thickness, plus the site work that actually decides whether the job makes money.

How asphalt driveway pricing works

The example rates ($4.50 per square foot at 2 inches, $6 at 3 inches) are placeholders for new residential paving over a prepared base. Your real rate rides on your plant price per ton, trucking, and crew. A useful piece of field math: a ton of hot mix covers roughly 80 square feet at 2 inches compacted, so thickness moves your material cost in a straight line. That’s why the calculator prices 2 inch and 3 inch as different rates instead of one number for everything.

What moves the quote beyond the base rate:

A driveway sanity check

A 20 by 30 foot residential driveway is 600 square feet. At the example 2 inch rate of $4.50 that’s $2,700 before tear-out or base work. If that number is off for your market, that’s exactly why these rates need replacing with yours.

Quote it with your own rates

PriceDesk runs this same calculator with your rates by thickness, your add-ons, and your minimum, on your phone. Set it up once and give every driveway caller a real number in about ten seconds.

Common questions

How long should you stay off a new asphalt driveway?

Foot traffic is usually fine within a day, but keep vehicles off for several days, longer in hot weather. Fresh asphalt keeps hardening for months, so avoid sharp steering turns while parked early on.

Is asphalt cheaper than concrete for a driveway?

At the example rates on this site, a 2 inch asphalt driveway runs $4.50 per square foot against $9 for broom-finish concrete, but those are examples, not market data. Asphalt usually wins on upfront price and concrete on lifespan, and your local rates decide the real gap.

Can you pave new asphalt over an old driveway?

If the existing asphalt is sound and the base is solid, an overlay can work, and the example overlay rate on this site is $3.25 per square foot. Badly cracked or rutted asphalt telegraphs through, so those driveways need tear-out first.
