An asphalt driveway quote is square footage times a thickness rate, plus the ground work underneath it. Contractors get hurt by quoting the first part and absorbing the second.
Set a rate per thickness
Thickness is tonnage, so each compacted depth you offer is its own rate, not a mental adjustment. The example rates in our calculator run $4.50 a square foot for 2 inches and $6 for 3 inches. On a 20 x 24 two-car driveway, that’s 480 square feet: $2,160 at the 2 inch example rate, $2,880 at 3 inches. Base prep is its own scope
Asphalt performs like whatever is under it. Paving over a sound, compacted gravel base is one job; building that base out of soft ground is a different job that happens to end in asphalt. Walk the site, probe the base, and write the base scope into the quote as its own line. The example add-ons in the calculator carry extra grading and base work at $1.50 a square foot and removal of old asphalt at $2, which on that same 480 sq ft driveway is another $960 just for the tear-out. Mobilization eats small jobs
A widening strip or a short approach costs nearly as much to set up as a full driveway: plant minimums on the mix, trucking, and hauling a paver and roller across town. The season is a pricing input
Hot mix has to go down and get compacted while it’s hot. Cold weather shrinks that window, and in northern climates the plants close for winter, so the whole year’s revenue runs through a paving season. That changes how you quote: firm numbers with honest scheduling in peak season, and a plan for what you sell when the plant is closed.
