A retaining wall quote that only prices the block you can see is a quote that loses money. The calculator above prices by square footage of wall face, length times exposed height, at the example rate of $32 per square foot. What that rate has to carry is the point of this page.
You price the face, but you build more than the face
Take a wall 40 feet long holding back 3 feet of grade. That is 120 square feet of face, and at the example $32 rate the quote is $3,840. Now look at what is buried in that number: excavation behind the wall line, a compacted gravel footing, a base course set below grade, gravel backfill, a drain pipe, and compaction in lifts as you backfill.
The customer sees maybe two thirds of the block you set. If your rate is built from visible block alone, every wall you build subsidizes the part underground.
Drainage is the actual job
Walls rarely fail because the block was weak. They fail because water built up behind them and pushed. The gravel backfill and the perforated pipe at the base are not add-ons, they are the difference between a wall and a future callback. Price them into your rate, and say so in the quote. “Includes drainage aggregate and drain pipe” is one line that separates you from the low bid that skipped it.
Soil matters too. Clay holds water against the wall and needs more gravel behind it. If the dig shows worse soil than you assumed, that is what the extra base add-on in the calculator is for.
Know your height line cold
Your local code sets the height where a wall stops being a landscaping job and starts needing an engineer’s stamp and a permit. Learn that number for your area and check it before you quote, because crossing it changes everything: design fees, geogrid, inspections, timeline. Sometimes the honest answer is two terraced shorter walls instead of one tall one, and the customer should hear that option from you first.
Walls also travel with patios. A back yard with grade problems usually needs both, and quoting them together, one mobilization, one excavation, is a better ticket than two visits. Run the flat work on the paver patio cost calculator.
