Item Example rate
Gravel driveway, 4 in depth $1.25 / sq ft
Gravel driveway, 6 in depth $1.75 / sq ft
Gravel pad $1.50 / sq ft
Regrade existing gravel $0.75 / sq ft
Weed barrier fabric (add-on) +$0.35 / sq ft
Strip sod / excavate (add-on) +$0.50 / sq ft
Haul away spoils (add-on) +$150 flat

Regrading is the repair-not-replace option for a rough gravel driveway, and the calculator above prices it at an example rate of $0.75 per square foot. Compare that with the example rate of $1.25 for new 4 inch rock on the gravel driveway cost calculator and you can see the pitch: when the rock is still there, reshaping it costs a fraction of replacing it.

Regrading recovers rock the customer already paid for

A beat-up gravel driveway usually has not lost its rock. The rock moved. It got plowed into the edges, thrown out of the wheel paths, and packed into windrows along the grass line, while the middle rutted down. A regrade rips the surface loose, drags that material back where it belongs, reshapes the crown, and compacts the whole thing tight. The customer is paying for machine time and skill, not tons of new stone, which is why the example rate sits well under a new-rock rate. On a 12 by 100 foot driveway, 1,200 square feet, the regrade example works out to $900, against $1,500 for new 4 inch rock at the example rates.

Without a crown, you are scheduling the next pothole

Potholes and washboard are water and traffic problems, and grading that just knocks the tops off the bumps treats the symptom. If the finished surface is flat, water sits in the wheel paths, softens the base, and the same holes reopen right where they were. The crown is the actual product: a center high point that sheds water to the edges, cut in with the blade and then compacted so it holds. Compaction is not optional either. Fluffed-up loose gravel washboards again within weeks of normal driving. Explaining this is also how you defend your price against the guy who drags the driveway for beer money.

Know when regrading is the wrong sell

Regrading redistributes rock. It cannot create it. If probing the drive turns up mud in the wheel paths, or the rock layer has thinned to a scattering over dirt, a regrade will only spread the shortage evenly. That job needs fresh material, sometimes over fabric, and often the honest quote is a regrade plus a top-up load, each as its own line item. The full costing method for the material side is in how to price a gravel driveway, and for customers making the bigger jump, there is gravel vs asphalt driveway.

Common questions

What does regrading a gravel driveway involve?

Ripping or scarifying the existing surface, pulling rock back out of the edges and potholes, reshaping the driveway with a crown so it sheds water, and compacting it back down. It rebuilds the shape using the rock that is already there.

Why do potholes come back after grading?

Usually because the water problem stayed. If the driveway is graded flat instead of crowned, or graded but never compacted, water sits in the wheel paths again and the same holes reopen in the same places.

Do I need new gravel or just regrading?

Probe the surface. If there is still a decent thickness of rock that has migrated and rutted, regrading recovers it. If your boot heel finds mud because the rock has sunk or thinned away, regrading alone spreads what little is left, and the drive needs fresh material.
