A pool deck is a patio with a hole in the middle and a much higher bar. Same concrete as a driveway, but the forming curves, the drainage has to be exact, and the finish has to stay grippy under bare wet feet. Price it like the skilled flatwork it is, not like an open pour.
Measure the band, not the box
The number starts with the concrete you actually place, which is the paved band around the water. Measure the full footprint and subtract the pool opening. A 40 by 30 deck footprint is 1,200 square feet; take out a 16 by 32 pool at 512 square feet and you are pouring about 688. Guess the whole box and you have overquoted the customer out of the job. Curved edges you measure as a rough band and round up, because the forming labor rises with every curve anyway.
Finish sets the rate, and the spread is wide
Pool customers rarely want plain broom. The example finish rates on our calculator run $9 a square foot for broom up to $16 for stamped, with colored at $12 and exposed aggregate at $13. On that 688 square foot deck the finish choice alone swings the number from about $6,200 to about $11,000. Those are example rates, and your market and mix cost set your real ones. Have the finish conversation with numbers showing, early, the way how to price stamped concrete lays out for the decorative work.
The lines that patios do not have
Three things push a pool deck past a flat area rate, and each earns its own line:
- Curved forming. Radius forms around the pool are slow. Bill the labor, do not bury it in the square foot rate.
- Drainage. The deck has to shed water away from the pool and the house. Deck drains, a slope you actually shoot, and sometimes a channel drain are real cost.
- Coping and grit. Coping caps the pool edge and is priced separately. A slip additive in the sealer is cheap and non-negotiable around water.
Hold a minimum and check the yardage
Small wraparound decks still need the truck, the crew, and the curved forms, so the minimum job charge applies here as much as anywhere. If a customer is weighing concrete against pavers, concrete pool deck vs pavers frames that call honestly.
