Pavers are the predictable patio: uniform units, engineered sizes, a rate you can stand behind. Flagstone is the one-of-a-kind patio: real stone, irregular shapes, and pricing that depends on the exact stone your yard carries. If the owner wants a knowable price and a faster build, pavers. If they want stone that looks like nothing else on the street and accept the labor that comes with it, flagstone.
What we can price here and what we can’t
Our example rates cover pavers: $16 per square foot for standard concrete pavers up to $24 for premium natural stone units in the paver patio calculator. On a 12x16 patio, which is 192 square feet, that is $3,072 at the standard example rate and $4,608 at the premium rate. Example numbers, not market prices.
We do not carry an example rate for flagstone, and we will not fake one. Flagstone pricing swings with the stone type, the thickness, sawn versus irregular, wet-set versus dry-laid, and what the local stone yard has this season. Any specific number here would be invented. Price flagstone from a real material quote for the actual stone, plus labor built from how your crew lays it.
Why the labor math is so different
Pavers are made to be identical. They go down in a rhythm over a screeded sand bed: string lines, pattern, plate compactor, done. That uniformity is why a paver crew’s daily production is knowable and why a per-square-foot rate holds.
Flagstone thickness varies piece to piece, sometimes across a single stone. Every piece gets bedded, checked, lifted, and re-bedded until it sits level with its neighbors, and irregular flag means fitting a puzzle with a saw close by. The setting bed absorbs the thickness differences, which means more material and much more judgment. Same square footage, very different day count.
Sourcing is part of the quote
Pavers come off a pallet from a supplier who will have the same product next month, which matters when the patio needs one more cube or a repair years later. Flagstone is quarry-dependent: color and thickness vary lot to lot, and matching the stone later is not guaranteed. Build delivery and waste into a flagstone bid, because irregular stone wastes more than uniform units.
Which patio calls for which
Budget certainty, pattern options, a faster schedule: pavers. A natural, irregular look that ages like a garden path: flagstone, priced from a real stone quote.
